Summer basketball camps provide an invaluable environment for players to develop their skills, build confidence and make life long friends. Given that there are so many quality options, it is important to plan, prepare and make the most of your experience. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to have a fantastic summer camp season.
Pre-Camp Preparation: Setting the Foundation
Pre-camp preparation is very important for a successful basketball camp. Before your camp even begins, establish goals for yourself for the week. What are the few key skills you would like to work on such as shooting, defending, or ball handling? Are you hoping to get more comfortable with the team’s system of play or to bond with your teammates.
Having defined goals will serve as your blueprint to measure how successful you have been when the week is all said and done. Also having basketballs in bulk is always a great way to make sure you have enough balls for all the kids.
We place a high value on physical fitness here at basketball camp. Arriving with a good base of physical fitness will help you get the most out of camp and can actually help you avoid injury. Plan on doing some cardio, stretching and some shooting and ball handling prior to your arrival (at least 2 weeks prior to camp).
We recommend you show up in athletic wear with a good pair of basketball shoes. Also, please bring any personal items you need (tooth brush, deoderant, shampoo, conditioner, water bottle, towel, etc.).
Active Participation: Engage Fully in Every Session
Your experience at camp is what you make of it. Be an active participant in all drills and scrimmages. Ask questions in the classroom and on the field, and take advantage of extra reps with our coaching staff. All of our coaches are passionate about working with young athletes who play with basketball size 27.5 and value players who are eager to learn.
Write down drills, techniques and strategies that your coaches discuss throughout camp. You can come back to these notes for continued practice after camp. Take full advantage of the team building activities and participating in class discussions. These are usually the most valuable learning experiences during the program.

Skill Development Focus Areas
Everyone has different areas of focus they need to improve. If you consider yourself a shooter, make sure you are putting in extra time in the gym just focusing on form and being consistent.
Even if you are just standing at the free throw line shooting or driving to the rack and pulling up for a 15 footer, make sure you are working on your footwork, where you’re placing your hands, and following through on your shot.
On the other end of the spectrum, if you are a defensive specialist, work on your positioning and anticipation for shots. In addition to this, make sure you are communicating with your teammates on the balls of their feet as the opponent is passing by.
One great tip for creating more game situations for players to work under pressure is to set up drills that mimic specific game scenarios. When players practice under such conditions, their mental toughness will be tested and they will fine-tune the ability to effectively execute various skills.
As players repeat the same drills over and over, their body will be building up valuable muscle memory to power their skills come game time.
Building Relationships and Network
At our basketball camps, you will have the opportunity to meet a number of great people, whether they are campers, coaches, or staff. Many of the relationships you form will last a life time, providing you with opportunities to play basketball after high school, lifelong friends, and role models to look up to.
You will have the chance to pass on your own knowledge and skills to your teammates as you learn new drills and techniques from our coaches.
Consider joining or creating a local basketball team outside of camp to continue improving after camp. Many of our camps provide a connection to local basketball groups, and their social media or alumni pages to help keep in touch with other campers.
Mental Preparation and Goal Setting
Remember to stay cool, calm, and competitive in situations where things may get heated. Visualization is a key mental skill, so imagine yourself and your teammates executing your favorite backdoor plays and putting on awesome shows.
Make sure you are using constructive self-talk in key situations and remember that it effects how you perform and how your teammates perform. Keeping yourself motivated to strive for greatness is essential. Set daily goals for yourself and remember how far you can improve over the week long camp.
It is important to get your mind ready to put in the hard work required for extensive training, and to remember that whilst pain and fatigue are not pleasant, they are part of the package of learning a new skill.
Train smarter, not harder; prepare yourself for difficult times and don’t be afraid to face challenges head on, it is often through hard work and not giving up that real growth occurs.
Post-Camp Follow-Up and Sustainability
Your camp experience doesn’t end on the last day of camp. Develop a structured practice plan to continue your growth as a tennis player utilizing the skills, drills, and knowledge you acquired.
Incorporate regular training sessions and apply your newly learned techniques to recreational tennis matches or local league competitions.
Photo and/or video journaling records your progress towards achievement of specific fundamental skills. It will help you identify skills which need to be develop further, and give you the ability to see your growth during harder times. These journal entries are great to show off to family and friends to motivate yourself to reach the highest level of basketball proficiency possible!
This is also a great moment post camp to follow up on important life skills as well such as sustainability and environmental practices. From the equipment we use, the clothes on our bodies, and the food we eat all have major impacts on the health of our planet. Use an eco friendly basketball or sustainable workout clothes men is an easy way to be apart of the solution.
Maximizing Social and Personal Growth
However, the basketball camp experience is about more than just drills and games with a basketball. Players are encouraged to assume leadership roles and mentor younger campers, take on special responsibilities with their assigned team, and develop crucial time management skills by juggling on-court instruction and off-court activities such as social events and needed rest.
At the same time, there is a lot of learning from all the other campers, with different nationalities and levels of play. It can help build character and awareness of different cultures.
The summer basketball camp experience can be as fulfilling as you want it to be.
By cultivating your focus on improving skills, fostering positive relationships, and adhering to an unrelenting practice regimen, you can turn your camp experience into a life-changing event.
By entering camp prepared and consistently attending practices, you can learn valuable basketball skills while gaining valuable life lessons and memories with friends.
