Introduction

There were approximately 628 million registered domain names on the web in January 2025. Nowadays, this number can be more than 700 million. If we interpret this fact, there is a big demand for domain names, and the demand dynamically grows year by year.

However, it’s no coincidence that domain names constantly appear and disappear online. As domain names are usually connected to legal entities, if one goes bankrupt or is neglected, the domain name will also fade away.

But domain names can’t be reserved indefinitely. Each domain has a set registration period. When that period ends, the owner can either renew it or let it expire.

What are expired domain names?

An expired domain is a domain name that was previously registered but has not been renewed by its owner, making it available for others to register again.

As you know, there are (almost) limitless options to use as a domain name. There are just some basic requirements to pass in order to launch your domain name with your website. But then why are countless agencies specialized in getting certain expired domain names as soon as they are available?

If we want to solve this mystery, we need to take one step back and understand the basics of the Domain Name System (DNS).

How is a domain name structured?

There are two basic parts of a domain name: the top-level domain (TLD) and the second-level domain (SLD). These two parts ensure that one domain name can only be used on one website at a time. Just think about it, how absurd it would be that Coca-cola and Pepsi would use the same exact website, cola.com.

In this case, the system would not understand whether the user wants to get to the first or the second company’s page, and dozens of users would get directed to the wrong site. It would be a complete disaster.

If we take an example, like coca-cola.com, in this case, the word “coca-cola” is the SLD, and “.com” is the TLD. There can be another “coca-cola” SLD on the market (technically it can be blocked, but it’s another story), but the combination of the TLD and the SLD (coca-cola.com), can not be used on more than one website.

And finally, we arrived at our conclusion: as “.com” is the most prominent TLD in the world, everything that is a catchy, short, and overused word, used as an SLD, with the combination of a “.com” TLD is expensive, and very rare. They are all taken, so a company that strives for a quick global recognition has two separate ways to take action:

  • Reach an agreement with the current owner to transfer the domain name — usually in exchange for payment.
  • Check the market for expired domain names and try to acquire one through an auction, ideally at a low cost.

Now, we understand why there is a need for expired domain names. In the next chapter, we will look at what other advantages expired domain names hide.

What are the rewards of using expired domain names?

We already mentioned how hard it is to find a relevant, but strong domain name for your niche, and grabbing an expired domain name is a way to avoid these hurdles. However, there can be other – neglected – opportunities.

Faster indexing and ranking

Google does a serious job. They need to code what your site contains, and what Google queries mean, and connect these two if they match. For this reason, all websites need to be part of an “indexing” process, where Google analyzes what your site contains and ranks it amongst the competitors’ sites.

Don’t forget, Google’s interest is to find the best possible sites for the target audience’s needs, and a conversion will most probably occur.

However, in the case of an expired domain, this indexing and ranking process could be smoother and less problematic.

Google detects that it was used before, and doesn’t put too much effort into going through the long process over and over again. Unfortunately, this is more likely just gossip, and Google never confirmed that.

Traffic boost

When a domain has been active in the past, it often retains a small but valuable audience. Some users may still have it bookmarked or revisit it out of habit, giving your new site an early traffic boost. These “lost visitors” can be your early adopters, who recommend your website to more and more people.

Branding opportunities

Sometimes, a domain name matches a brand name, which is logical since users often see your domain as your brand’s online identity. If these two don’t match up, your task in certain areas (for example, to migrate your offline buyer to the online environment) is way harder.

If you can grab an expired domain name that more or less fits with your current business name, or at least is easy to brand in your industry, you have half the success.

What are the risks of using expired domain names?

Before you push everything away just to grab an expired domain name as soon as possible, we need to take a look at its negative aspects: why don’t we always stick with expired domain names?

Toxic backlinks and penalties

First of all, it has a history. And as it can be a huge advantage, it can also be a drawback. Maybe it was used for sharing adult content, or was used as a betting site. Even worse, it might have accumulated multiple Google penalties.

This does not fade away automatically as it lands on another hand. The penalties and Google’s restrictions will make you suffer for longer than you ever imagined.

Legal and ethical issues

Some expired domains still carry trademarks or brand names, and could cause legal disputes if you start using them commercially.

Therefore, always check for trademark conflicts before registering.

Conclusion

In this article, we took a deep dive into expired domain names and analysed why they are popular, what their greatest superpowers are, and their weak points.

Buying expired domain names can be a great option for your brand, if you want to expand your number of visitors quickly, and strive for global success.

On the other hand, due to its cost and questionable effectiveness, a lot of entrepreneurs are still afraid to take advantage of this option.
