Work Out Your Budget

One of the first things you need to do is work out how much of a budget you have to play with. Knowing this will give you a rough idea of how much you need to spend on various destinations, eateries, and accommodations.

Without much money, you won’t be able to do the things you want to do. Once you have your budget, you will know where to start looking and which types of road trips you can afford.

Plan Your Destinations

Once you know how much money you have then you can start researching different road trip routes. You might want to do one of the famous, well known road trips such as Route 66 or the Icelandic ring road.

However, you don’t have to as you could just drive around your home country taking in different sites.

You might have always wanted to do certain road trips and now it’s your chance to tick these off your list. Make sure you do your research, as you may want to avoid certain parts of road trips.

How Long You Go For

Another thing you need to work out is how long you want to go for. A road trip can vary in length and be for any time frame you want.

Typically people tend to go away for around three weeks but it all depends on how much time you are able to book off work. You don’t always need to go away for a long time in order to have a great time.

You can work carefully to plan your time and which destinations you can go to. You could even do a road trip with just a week to play with.

Things To See

When you go on a road trip you will want to see things and take in the sites along the way. Depending on which one you do, you may need to book things before you go.

However, if you plan on doing Route 66 then a lot of sites are simply at the side of the road, such as the Cadillac ranch and the giant whale.

When you are planning your road trip be sure to check which sites and activities need to be pre booked. You don’t want to miss out when you get there to find it already fully booked.

Plan For The Weather

Now you need to think about what to take with you on your trip. Are you taking a holdall or a suitcase as this will change how much you can physically take. It is probably best to wait until just before you go to pack, so you can check the weather and pack accordingly.

The last thing you want is to pack t-shirts and shorts for it to be cold and rainy the whole time.

If you plan on going to fancy restaurants along the way then you will need some nice clothes to wear. It sounds like the perfect excuse to go shopping.

Which Vehicle

What vehicle are you going to take with you? A road trip needs a reliable vehicle that won’t break down when you are miles from anywhere. If you already have a car don’t feel like you need to take it with you.

It might be a runner that gets you from A to B but won’t necessarily get you all the way across the country and back again.

You could always look at how much it would be to hire a car or even an RV for your trip, companies might surprise you and be cheaper than you thought.

Service The Vehicle

If you do decide to take your own car or other form of transportation then you will need to get it serviced before you go. This is to ensure that it will cope with such a long journey.

You will need to get the engine, battery, and wheels checked at the very least.

If you will be driving through icy and snowy conditions then your wheels might need to be changed to provide you with better grip on the roads. Make sure you have the number of a tow truck if you are unfortunate enough to break down.

Have Emergency Kit

When you are planning a road trip it is important you have an emergency kit in your car if you were to break down in the middle of nowhere. This can happen and it has happened to many people previously.

Make sure that you have bottles of water, blankets, and warning signs to alert other road users that you have broken down.

This should all be kept neat and tidy in your boot for if you ever need it. In some countries you also need to have a high-vis jacket in your emergency kit as well.

Snacks Along The Way

You will often get hungry on longer drives so it is essential you pack snacks and drinks for the journeys you are going to be doing. Make sure you aren’t overindulging on junk food as this is not very good for you. Try to get some healthy snacks such as vegetable sticks and fruit to nibble on.

Water is the best thing you can drink, however, it does have a habit of creating more frequent toilet visits. You will also need to work out where you are going to stop along the way to have breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Make sure you factor this cost into your budget when you work it out. If eateries are popular then you may need to book in advance so you ensure you get a table.

Invest In A Cooler

It might be helpful to invest in a cooler for your vehicle, these typically plug into your cigarette lighter or USB ports.

You can then be sure that your snacks and drinks are always cold and refreshing when you go to drink them.

Make Sure You Can Use Maps

If you are going on a journey you are unfamiliar with then you might need to use the map app on your phone or invest in a sat nav.

However, bear in mind that if you are going somewhere with little to no signal then you might end up needing a good old fashioned map book to guide your way.

If you have a passenger that is good at giving directions then give them the job while you focus on the road ahead.

Take A Camera

Lastly, you will be making so many memories and seeing so many amazing things on your road trip, you will want these to last forever. Take a camera with you wherever you go as you never know what you will see on your travels.

Camera phones are fully equipped with fantastic cameras these days so you won’t need a separate digital camera. However, if you are a dab hand with photography then you might already have a full camera set up that you can take with you.
