What happens when you take your suit off is just as important as looking good in it. We give you Four Tips to keep your suits top notch.
Here is the list of five tips to take care of your suits:
Cleaning:
We’ve heard there are guys out there who will dry-clean their suits week after week. The thought behind that is right—you want to show up to the office looking fresh. But over-dry-cleaning your suit will wear away the natural fibers and take some years off. Use the suit’s smell as a guide. If it’s ripe, take it to the cleaners, otherwise, spot cleaning with water and a soft towel on small stains.
Pressing:
If you want to prolong the life of your suit, get a steamer. Do not use a dry iron as it will burn the fibers and add a sheen to the material (only good when it’s meant to have it). But, if your steamer isn’t doing the job you need, bring it to the cleaners and ask them to press it.
Hanging:
It’s no big mystery that suits should be hung up in your closet. But there’s more to it than just slapping it on a wire hanger. To help your suit maintain its form, use plastic or wooden coat hangers with rounded edges. That fills out the shoulder nicely, and allows it to sit and drape nicely. When it sits for a day or two, the suit will naturally go back to its original drape. It also allows moisture to exit, too.
Packing:
Although there are suitcases out there specifically tailored to suiting, use the “the roll.” You turn the suit inside out, put the shoulders together, and roll it up. Honestly, that’s the way to travel. But be careful to make sure the seams and lapels are lined up as you fold, then do an easy loose roll from the bottom up. Good news for fans of the carry-on.
Storing:
Not all suits are seasonless. Before you put away your heavy wool for summer or your light ones for winter. Have it dry cleaned before you put away for the end of the season. That way you strip the suit of any food particles or anything like that—moths will go after that shit like crazy.
