When driving, I frequently have thoughts of roads with no other drivers. If you are looking for an empty stretch of road to safely test your skills, there is only one place to go. That is to an authorised motorsport track.
Our roadways are no place for practicing skills. When you push the envelope of your ability and vehicle’s performance to the point of failure, other motorists pay the price, sometimes with their lives.
Do you want a real race experience? Want to push a foreign supercar to the limit? Want to set new personal bests in cornering and high-speed handling? You can walk into Eastern Creek Hot Lap and sit in a Lamborghini or Ferrari? I have always had a heart for Ferrari. What about you?

Prepare yourself to be fully trained by professional in-car coaches in a V8 track car. These vehicles are maintained at the peak of safety and are intended for track use, hard cornering, and swift acceleration. Do you think your tuned Honda is quick? Get in a real race car on this track and recognise your place on the road.
There are plenty of customisations we can install and use to improve the performance characteristics of any vehicle. I am a big fan of motor shows and the vast array of personalisations, tuning, and power being displayed. Even a new production Lamborghini Temerario is not at the pinnacle of possible performance.
A track-car version is hollowed out, lightened, and has dramatically improved components that are not for use on our roadways. Looking for an excellent corporate team-building event? Here’s an idea for your bridesmaids and groomsmen as well. Take them to the track and race it out in a Lotus you might never own.
Then you can go out for a few coldies. After, not before. I am a huge fan of the stadium truck races. Point me to the track with those I can drive. I can crawl my ute up a dusty trail or bog through some mud, but the style of truck that makes the Paris/Dakar is barely a truck at all.
A track day will improve your spatial awareness and reaction times, quite possibly saving your life and the lives of vehicle occupants during daily driving and the insanity we can face on the road.
Thankfully, in day-to-day driving, we get few opportunities to face real danger. A day at the track will expose you to dozens of dangers in the safest possible environment.
A simulator is one way to learn new skills but full-motion simulators are few and very expensive. Nothing on wheels can replace the thrill of being centimeters away from other cars in competition at speed. Keep it off the roads. Please.
If you want to become a race driver in an actual race car and reach sponsorship-level competition, there is a pathway to race licensing. It does not start at the motor vehicle department or street racing.
It starts with a professional mindset to acquire the skills. Like your career, you need to be educated to advance. Drive smarter and safer after only one day at the track.
