A diamond certificate is something you receive from a third-party company that rates the diamond according to its characteristics. When you are buying an expensive diamond, make sure to get the certificate along to know the complete value of the piece. GIA, AGS, IGI, EGL USA, etc., are some common certifications. If you plan to get a custom engagement ring in Dallas, Texas, ensure that you get it from a reputed wholesale jeweller.

GIA

The Gemologist Institute of America is one of the oldest institutes to study diamonds and provide certificates based on them. The 4 Cs of evaluating diamonds include Clarity, Color, Cut, and Carat weight, which are also coined by GIA. A Gemologist Institute of America certificate is an extensive document that not only states the characteristics of the diamond but also provides a diagram of the diamond to imply its proportions and imperfections.

AGS

The American Gem Society is another stone grading company and they specialize in round-cut diamonds. It was established back in the year 1930. The main aim of society was to protect the customers from protecting frauds and scammers. However, the AGS doesn’t follow the conventional methods of grading the diamonds. A 0-10 scale is used to rate the diamonds, 0 being the highest rating while 10 is the lowest.

IGI

International Gemological Institute has over 18 laboratories working worldwide and is one of the most reliable ones as well. IGI is labeled as one of the largest organizations that grades diamonds and other finished stones.

EGL USA

This laboratory has been evaluating diamonds since the 1970s and is known to be a lab that started testing diamonds that were less than 1 carat.

What to Look for in a Diamond Certificate Laboratory?

Consistency

If you are trying a lab for the first time, it is important to consider its consistency over the strictness of the grade. One lab may rate the diamond differently than the other, but the consistency in their own results is what makes them reliable.

Grading is Subjective

There are neither central criteria nor a central organization that decides on the grading of these stones. If one lab defines 0 to be the highest quality number, the other can label 0 as the lowest. This is solely the lab’s preferences as long as they are consistent with their grading.

Price over Certification

No matter what certification you receive, if you think that the diamond is not worth the price you are paying for, then think again. If you think you are being overly charged, hire a diamond expert to evaluate the piece for you. The price of the diamond reflects the cut, the quality, and the color.

If you have the certificate but you still are not completely satisfied, you can choose another piece or hire a private expert to look at it. When you go out to buy diamonds, there are chances that you will be scammed as well, so having an expert by your side can be beneficial.
