We mistakenly think that having fancy or expensive surfing for a steamer wetsuit will last longer than if we had bought a lower-end wetsuit. Well, it’s not like that, high-end wetsuits have more elasticity than lower-end ones, so it’s more comfortable for us to put on, take off, and for our movements in the water, like paddling and moving around on the board. Well, they’re better in that sense, but having a neoprene wetsuit for steaming or surfing with greater stretch, is even more sensitive than low-end suits, and it’s very important to take good care of them.

If you follow the following tips we explain below, you will have no problem keeping your surfing and steamer wetsuits for a long time:

Wetsuit

1. Don’t let your suit dry in the sun

This is the most important advice to follow, sun exposure to the neoprene surfing wetsuit causes it to dry out and lose its elasticity. Usually, when we use it on the beach, we put it out to dry in the sun, and it’s a big mistake. If you’re at the beach, place it in the shade or under your cover.

It is preferable to leave your surfing wetsuit in the car than to expose it to the sun, it is more advisable that you keep it inside your house, for example in the bathroom, without any exposure to the sun once rinsed with fresh water.

2. Watch your nails when wearing the wetsuit

Pay attention to how you put on or take off your steamer wetsuit, we often have long nails, and when we put on the neoprene steamer wetsuit. We dig our fingers into it to pull hard, which means if we have long nails we can tear them without realizing it. With smooth neoprene steamer wetsuits (sealskin type), you must be careful, as they are even more sensitive to these small cuts.

3. Do not place the surfing suit on aggressive floors

When we get out of the water we don’t pay attention to where we change our surfing wetsuit, if it’s on the beach nothing happens, the sand will only dirty it, but changing it in the parking lot can tear your surfing wetsuit. Try changing into terrain that is not aggressive to your surfing wetsuits, such as a lawn or beach sand. Avoid hard floors like asphalt, which can scratch your surfing wetsuit.

Another option would be to use a changing mat so as not to damage or soil your surfing wetsuit, you have many changing mats of different brands at very affordable prices that will prevent you from damaging your surfing wetsuit.

4. Clean your steamer wetsuit with fresh cold water and no detergents

To clean the steamer wetsuit you should not use hot water, even if it is winter and you are cold, hot water makes the clothes lose elasticity, and you should always use cold and fresh water.

We also do not recommend using detergents that can be corrosive to your steamer wetsuit. If you think your steamer suit smells bad or you want to wash it, use specialized products for it. This kind of product will make your steamer wetsuit smell good without being harmful, you should mix it with plenty of water and use the mixture to rinse your steamer wetsuit.

5. Store carefully

The way you store your surfing wetsuit is also an important step so that it lasts a long time. After cleaning your surfing wetsuit, store it on a hanger or fold it gently. Only if the wetsuits are thick like 5mm or 7mm, the ideal is to leave them outside the hanger so they don’t mark.
